Abstract

Financial literacy is crucial for sound investment decisions and financial well-being. However, the rise of online gambling and the blurred line between investment and gambling raise concerns about individual financial stability, especially in the digital era. This study explores how low financial literacy can lead to gambling-like investment behaviors, their psychological and social impacts, and the urgency of enhancing financial education. Using a mixed-method approach, it analyzes data from national financial literacy surveys, investment loss case studies, and online gambling trends. Findings show that a lack of financial literacy often results in impulsive decisions driven by Fear of Missing Out (FoMO), causing significant financial losses and psychological stress. The study proposes SMILE (Smart Money Investing and Learning Ecosystem), an integrated solution including gamified financial education, stricter online gambling regulations, and community-based financial empowerment programs. The results highlight the importance of financial literacy in distinguishing investment from gambling, managing risks, and promoting long-term financial well-being. This research underscores the need for comprehensive financial education to mitigate the negative impacts of speculative investments and online gambling on individuals and society.
