SPEECH FUNCTION USED BY THE MAIN CHARACTER IN THE JUJUTSU KAISEN 0 MOVIE BY SUNGHOO PARK AS MATERIAL FOR TEACHING ENGLISH

Abstract

The aims of this study are to identify the types of speech function used by the main character in Jujutsu Kaisen 0 movie, and to find out the perspectives of lecturer towards the use of speech function employed by the main character in the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 movie as material in teaching English. The researcher used descriptive qualitative method. To analyze the data, the researcher used Holmes’s theory. In collecting data, the researcher was watching the movie, transcribes the movie orthographically, open coding were done to analyze the data, described the data and interpret, represented and conclude the data. To gathered another data, the researcher has interview with lecturer, presented the data in narrative or long coherent paragraphs, and made conclusion. The results shows that there are 110 utterances used by Yuta and found 5 types of speech function Yuta. Those are referential function 25% (27 utterances), directive function 15% (16 utterances), expressive function 54% (59 utterances), phatic function 7% (6 utterances), and poetic function 1% (1 utterance). There was no metalinguistics functions. While, in utterances used by Gojo there are 116 utterances and found 5 types of speech function. Those are referential function 46% (53 utterances), directive function 22% (25 utterances), expressive function 25% (29 utterances), phatic function 7% (8 utterances), and poetic function 1% (1 utterance). Similar with Yuta, utterances used by Gojo was no found metalinguistics function. Based on the result of interview with lecturer, the types of speech functions used by the main character in Jujutsu Kaisen 0 movie can be applied as material for teaching English.
