SEMIOTIKA FERDINAND DE SAUSSURE PADA NOVEL GADIS KRETEK KARYA RATIH KUMALA

Abstract

This research was conducted to examine Ferdinand De Saussure's semiotics in the novel Gadis Kretek by Ratih Kumala. Saussure's semiotic study in this research only focuses on two things, namely the signifier and the signified. The novel Gadis Kretek  by Ratih Kumala is a literary work in the historical fiction genre which contains signifiers and signifieds, so it can be observed using semiotics. Different from previous research which used the novel Gadis Kretek as a research object, this research has the main aim of appreciating novel literary works from a linguistic perspective, namely by interpreting the meaning of a sign in the novel. This research is a qualitative descriptive research, where the data and discussion are reported in the form of descriptions or descriptions, using reading and note-taking techniques, as the techniques used in data collection. Through the results and discussions that have been carried out, the novel Gadis Kretek by Ratih Kumala contains 40 signifiers and signifieds, while the data included in this research report is 11 data, namely (1) 3 metaphorical figures of speech, (2) Association figures of speech with 2 data, (3) Skin color as the identity of the country a person comes from, (4) Figure of speech for personification with 2 data, (5) Relations between Japanese and Indonesians, (6) Element of time, and (7) Figure of speech sarcasm.
